Atlas Shrugged has been a theme in my blog neighborhood recently, largely due to Trey Givens and Heather’s
cat.
So, reflecting (read: surfing) about that book, I want to note for the record that Hugh Akston is my favorite character. As in “I want to be more like that guy.”

Follow the money
opensecrets.org is a great site that exposes political fundraising data in an variety of accessible forms. Go poke around for a little bit. Specific gems I ran across include Missouri’s Senate race was the 2nd most expensive in 2002, and local
data includes records of all donations by zipcode (some people I didn’t know […]
The pot, on tint-
Heather offers link-love to an article that rants
about Wired. I agree completely about the poor journalism, I let my subscription lapse in 2001, after faithfully reading every issue from the beginning for years. The quality of writing had sunk to the level of local weekly fishwrappers.
Unfortunately, this article then picks a single point […]
Aluminum
My newest
toy has arrived. I can’t get over how quiet it is compared to the TiBook. This is now my 6th Powerbook without a single dead pixel.
You want one.
Retirement
A week ago, I started an experiment by including BlogSnob (a reciprocal link network) and MarketBanker (an advertising network akin to Google’s AdSense but not as stupid) text banners under “Sponsored Links” on the left. I was curious about two things: how many click outs will I get from what I suspect to be […]
NA (Not an Acronym)
Silly Brian, the NT in Windows NT only stands for “New Technology” if you’re in the marketing department of Microsoft. NT was slang for N-Ten, the code name for the Intel’s next big processor (circa 1988), which the OS was originally intended for. Sometime after it became Windows NT, some MBA decided it […]
Going broke
This Salon article on the leading cause of bankruptcy is another good reason to join VHEMT.
Silence
My brother is about to begin a 30-day silent retreat, highly structured with most of his time devoted to specific forms of prayer. Same as the Jebbies have been doing for the past 5 centuries. I spent some time talking about it with him yesterday. While I’m not enough of a mystic […]
Simple stuff
While talking to the mystic brother who is taking up a lifestyle that includes (among other inconceivable sacrifices) a commitment to the adage of living simply, I took note of my new wastebasket. I admitted to a friend that it costs as much as feeding a family of four on a budget for weeks. […]
Biorythms
I must remember not to drive in St. Louis during rush hour on overcast, rainy days. Something about the time of day and light level makes drivers into assholes and pedestrians suicidally stupid.
