Konfabulated

The Konfabulator guys are finally porting
to Windows. I was initially very excited to develop widgets, but lost my enthusiasm when I felt the authors didn’t realize the potential of an approachable, high-level, standards-based development platform. Glad to see they’re expanding, but it’s too late to beat Flex to the punch.

Craftsmanship

Joel Spolsky makes a good case for why developing software products allows for more craftsmanship than IT project-oriented development.

The Return of the King

I played hooky yesterday to watch the last
installment of the Lord of the Rings
movies.
Now, I viewed the Matrix
series with a critical eye, looking for philosophical themes and analyzing every character and plot turn. This enabled me to enjoy the last
one, while many others were disappointed.
LOTR, though, I attended looking only for enticing cinema. […]

White Christmas

Sam Kashy officially made White
Christmas at the American Theatre an annual event yesterday. This year, the Gateway Men’s Chorus opened with a good program, and the cabaret seating and diverse crowd makes for an enjoyable time. I’m declaring this a tradition.

Camera phones and enterprise security

The META Group, among others, is warning that camera phones pose a security threat to
enterprises. (You know, those entities we used to call “organizations” or “businesses”.) I’m afraid I just don’t understand what the fuss is about. Is anyone actually convinced that we can somehow prevent information leaks by controlling communication channels? […]

Airborne viruses

They’ve finally done it. Dave and I have long speculated that an “virus platform” that spread silently but prepare a machine to be infected by plug-ins was inevitable. Now, Windows users had best hope they don’t implement any of the mischievous plug-ins we imagined (e.g. pepper the Office spell check dictionary with misspellings, […]

Cursed

My Miata today subjected me to unscheduled maintenance for the first time (clutch hydraulic hose burst). Kristan was kind enough to follow me to the mechanic and let me borrow her car for the day, so I subsequently dropped her off at work.
I hadn’t even gotten off the side street for her office before […]

Giving

We just got back from shopping for the St. Patrick Center Christmas Sponsorship, which I learned of through the Residents Association, and I realized I hadn’t used my little soapbox to promote it. It’s probably too late this year, but if you live in St. Louis, please consider participating next year.

Communal mythic experience

Last Tuesday, we went to the New
Cathedral for the annual benefit Holiday Brass Concert that packs the pews of this rather large space. The large but silent audience and beautifully orchestrated music creates one of those sublime experiences of ritual that feels like a connection to something larger than your conscious self. Depending […]
