Friday night the three of us stayed with the family of a friend Kurt made in the novitiate. Ms. Jenny and Mr. Tim Courville live in a very different culture than the Browns: a cozy house reminiscent of suburban St. Louis, hobbies with motorcycles, sports cars, and trucks. Yet they, too, are steeped […]

Comings and Going
This morning, I awoke to crop dusters, we went to the most brief Catholic Mass I’ve ever experienced, and we toured the family rice and crawfish farms, where we selected a sack of crawfish freshly harvested, for lunch.
Later, my father and I drove to Grand Coteau and picked up Kurt from the novitiate, which he […]
Southern anachronisms
I drove with my father and John Brown, a Jesuit novice close to him, down to the Browns’ home at Cheneyville, LA. The scene of their house upon arrival is best described as classic and timeless: a white southern plantation home set behind a drive lined with centuries-old oaks, complete with wraparound porch, wood […]
Loop to loop
Met Ryan? at the Loop for drinks, then we took a brisk ride around the Forest Park trail loop. That trail is a known quantity for me, having traversed it by foot and bicycle probably hundreds of times in my life. This was the first full loop on the new road bike, and […]
Trailnet
Trailnet is a group here in St. Louis that advocates building trails (mountain biking, walking, cycling) and helps fund the establishment and maintenance of them. They are also the parent organization for the Bicycle Fun Club, which brings together hundreds of cyclists nearly every weekend of riding season for supported rides.
Coda
Last night, during a late-night coding session, I finally reached the end of the “Rate Me” playlist on the i Pod?. This means that every one of the 9500 tracks in my library has now been assigned the iTunes 1-5 star rating. I will use the ratings to prioritize songs for review when […]
Merriweather and William
Trailnet?’s Lewis and Clark bicentennial ride was advertised as “kid friendly” because the short route was only 14 miles, flat, and a simple there-and-back path that required only as much commitment as the distance you travelled before turning back.
The 46 mile route I took (after tagging along for the medium route with Mike on his […]
In costume
A lazy ride this morning from home to the Loop to meet Will, his sister Jamie, her boy Don, and Heather. Joined them to Brown & Midland, then returned full force against the wind and in the drops. Whee!
This weekend is the loft tour downtown, so the streets are alive with people the […]
Grown Ups
Alex rode to the loft, we both rode to the Loop to meet Curt, Heather, Ryan, and Will, and we set out west. We took Clayton to Conway, and at Chesterfield Parkway the north county residents realized they were not, in fact, getting any closer to home. Heather, Ryan, and Will headed back […]
Return to the midwest
Short ride from Ryan’s to the Loop and back, meeting with Will along the way.
One might think that walking all over DC? for over a week until my legs were sore would have kept then in shape for cycling. Nope.
