Visual weblog

A crazy idea that needs to be written down to get it out of my head: a wordless, visual weblog. Posts are pictures with no explanation prose, and the comments form is a sketchpad for visitors to draw upon.

Chat of the week

  • J: I may or may not be in this afternoon
  • HG: which way will you be spinning?
  • J: not sure yet
  • HG: I guess we’ll know when we measure
  • J: are we talking about the same thing?
  • HG: quantum physics humor?
  • J: i guess not

Fidget-friendly

I decided it was time for a wireless mouse, and decided to finally try one of those modern button-congested monstrosities, the Logitech MX Revolution. Most of it’s superfluous buttons are easily ignored, and the scroll wheel can be set to spin freely, perfect for fidgeting.

The OS X drivers, though, suck. Contrary to mainstream reviews, the software is widely despised, and even Logitech’s own forums are teeming with complaints.

Thankfully, there’s SteerMouse. With the thumbwheel set to navigate through lists and trigger Exposé, it’s so pleasant to use I miss it when sitting on the couch using the MacBook’s trackpad.

Hiccup

Two weeks ago I had a hiccup with DNS (old zone got deactivated before the new one was live) and a few caches led to resolution problems. Amazingly enough, Feedburner has problems with stuck DNS caches, so this resulted in more than a day of outage for my syndication feed.

Interestingly, the traffic has still not recovered. I guess some of the random people who’d subscribed got errors in their readers and unsubscribed.

I want a SunPad

I was flipping through Marc’s copy of Tog on Software Design and was intrigued by the “SunPad” in Tognazzini’s description of Sun’s Starfire film (which itself is very reminiscient of Apple’s Knowledge Navigator concept):

Starfire SunPad

She looks at the SunPad display, which now has the camera controls slaved to it. It’s as if the SunPad were a large camera viewfinder. She presses the button which turns on the pad, then zooms out using the zoom buttons as she begins to move the pad (and boom).

Today, we can readily produce a handheld screen with an accelerometer for position sensing. As a bonus, we can even have a camera embedded on the backside. So when do I get to use one to “scan” a scene or object and package the imagery for playback later (or elsewhere)?

The Meaning of Life

For me, the meaning of life is to leave the world a better place than you found it. Many of us will come and go, leaving ripples that fade over time into the noise of history. A select few, though, will play the role of chaos theory’s butterfly. Through actions that perhaps even appear insignificant, they’ll kick off waves of change that leave a lasting impression on the landscape of human culture. I hope that somehow I manage to start some waves that improve the human condition over the long term.

- Me, apparently

I’f I’d know it’d end up in print I might’ve given more thought to that particular blog comment.
